Derwent Vs Faber Castell Pencils

While Derwent Inktense boasts of 4 mm cores Faber-Castells watercolor pencils are not far behind with 38 mm leads. My first pastel purchase back in August 2020 was a 24-pastel pencil set of Stabilo CarbOthellos after being inspired by wildlife artist Jason Morgans videos.

Derwent vs faber castell pencils. It really does work something like pastel pencil. Both Faber Castell and Staedtler sharpened well but Derwent was prone to breaking. Whenever I hear artists rave about drawing pencils its always abut one of these top 2 choices.

Blackwing Palomino- Blackwings have been around for a long time and have remained a cult favorite probably based on their history. Im not necessarily saying that the 9000s are superior to the other pencils Ive awarded top marks to but for the type of drawing that I do light quite detailed portraits they suit my style better than a darker softer range. This isnt a problem for me because I sharpen my pencils with a craft knife.

So I decided to compare different types of Derwent pencils. I prefer the Derwent because it glides on more smoothly and colours like a dream. They are oil-based which makes them a little firmer than most other brands but the pigments are still wonderfully intense an easy to lay down.

I loved it so much I regretted not getting a larger set. The Faber Castell sharpens well as does the Steadlter which has lovely soft wood which peels away beautifully with the scalpel. The faber-castell might be slightly harder.
